The Ramble is a thirty-six-acre woodland defined by its dense canopy, rocky schist outcroppings, and a labyrinth of narrow, winding paths designed to obscure the city skyline. Envisioned by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux as a wild garden within their eighteen fifty-seven Greensward Plan, the landscape was meticulously engineered to evoke the rugged terrain of the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains.
