The Mall

The Mall is a wide, straight promenade in Central Park, distinguished by its formal, symmetrical design and four rows of towering American elm trees. Landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux included this quarter-mile path in their eighteen fifty-eight Greensward Plan, intending it to be the only straight walkway in the entire park. They envisioned the space as an open-air hall of reception where people from all walks of life could stroll and socialize.
