Wollman Rink sits in the southeast corner of Central Park, a thirty-three-thousand-square-foot expanse of ice framed by the midtown skyline. Philanthropist Kate Wollman donated six hundred thousand dollars for its construction in nineteen forty-nine, creating a memorial to her parents and siblings. When it opened in nineteen fifty, the rink offered a new way for residents to skate throughout the winter regardless of the weather, and over three hundred thousand people glided across the surface during its first year.
