The Gaslight Cafe, once located at one hundred sixteen MacDougal Street, defined the bohemian energy of Greenwich Village between nineteen fifty-eight and nineteen seventy-one. You can identify its former site by the two sets of stone stairs leading down into what was once a deep, narrow basement. Originally known as the Gaslight Poetry Cafe, the venue welcomed Beat Generation writers like Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso to share their work in a dry, alcohol-free atmosphere that allowed for all-night performances.
