The Portland Saturday Market is recognized by the sprawling open-air arrangement of vendor stalls tucked beneath the western end of the Burnside Bridge and across the nearby Ankeny Plaza. Founded in nineteen seventy-four by craftspeople Sheri Teasdale and Andrea Scharf, the market emerged from a desire to create a local space for artisans to sell their handmade goods directly to the public. They drew inspiration from a similar market in Eugene, Oregon, and secured their first location in a downtown parking lot known as the Butterfly Lot, which was provided by Bill Naito.
