Lownsdale Square

Lownsdale Square is defined by the Soldiers Monument, a tall granite obelisk standing at its center. Topped by a bronze soldier of the Second Oregon Volunteer Infantry, the sculpture was created by Douglas Tilden in nineteen oh six to honor Oregonians who fought in the Spanish-American War. The base of the monument features two howitzers once used in the defense of Fort Sumter. Because these cannons were used by both Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War, Colonel Henry E. Dosch arranged for one to face north and the other to face south.
