The Ulugh Beg Madrasah is defined by its massive, pointed entrance portal—the pishtaq—which is decorated with blue-tiled star patterns reflecting the astronomical interests of its founder. Built between fourteen seventeen and fourteen twenty-one, this is the oldest surviving structure on Registan Square. It was commissioned by Ulugh Beg, a Timurid governor, ruler, and mathematician who sought to turn Samarkand into a center for scientific learning.
