Hunter Street, which intersects with O'Connell Street here, is one of the oldest thoroughfares in Sydney. Originally named Bell Street, it was renamed in eighteen twenty-three to honor John Hunter, the second governor of New South Wales. For much of its history, this area functioned as a commercial and civic hub, marked by Victorian-era offices and storefronts that supported the city's early economic life.
