Burgriesenhaus

The Burgriesenhaus, located on Hofgasse, is distinguished by its four-story late-Gothic façade and a peculiar architectural curiosity known as the whispering arch. Built around fourteen ninety for Archduke Sigismund the Rich in Coin, this structure served as the residence of the archduke's bodyguard, Nikolaus Haidl. Haidl was known as the castle giant, and his presence inspired the building’s name. A sandstone statue of the giant, originally carved for his grave in the fifteenth century, stood in a niche on the house façade for centuries.
