The Golden Roof, or Goldenes Dachl, is marked by an ornate, three-story balcony covered in two thousand six hundred fifty-seven fire-gilded copper shingles. Located in the heart of the Old Town, this late-Gothic oriel was built onto the residence known as the Neuhof between fourteen ninety-seven and fifteen hundred. It was commissioned by Emperor Maximilian the First, who used the balcony as a royal box to watch tournaments and festivities unfolding in the square below.
