The Kaufhaus Tyrol stands along Maria-Theresien-Straße as a long, striking façade of white, textured concrete panels, broken by a rhythm of tall, vertical windows. This shopping center occupies the site where the Jewish families Bauer and Schwarz opened the first department store in the region in nineteen oh eight. That original structure was a pioneer for its time, featuring the city’s first use of reinforced concrete, along with elevators and a large glass-roofed atrium.
