The Fairmont Château Laurier is recognized by its steep copper roof, fanciful turrets, and pale Indiana limestone walls, which rise above the Ottawa River and the Rideau Canal. Commissioned in nineteen oh seven by Charles Melville Hays, the general manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the hotel was designed in a French Renaissance style to complement the nearby Parliament Buildings. The structure was built between nineteen oh eight and nineteen twelve to provide a luxury destination for rail travelers.
