Enoch Turner Schoolhouse Museum and Special Events Venue

The Enoch Turner Schoolhouse is a one-story red brick building with an exclamation mark window design flanking the front door. Constructed in eighteen forty-eight, it stands as the oldest surviving schoolhouse in Toronto. The school was founded by Enoch Turner, a wealthy brewer who saw that local immigrant children from the nearby neighborhood of Corktown lacked access to education. When city officials refused to fund schools through taxation at the time, Turner paid for the building and its operation himself, creating the city's first free school.
