Public Art: Flatiron Mural by Derek Besant

The back wall of the Gooderham Building features a mural that appears as a massive canvas pinned to the brickwork, with edges that seem to flutter in the breeze. Created in nineteen eighty by the Canadian artist Derek Besant, this installation uses a trompe l’oeil technique to trick the eye into seeing a three-dimensional scene where only a flat wall exists. The image is a mirror reflection of the Perkins Building, which stands directly across the street.
