Place Vauquelin is a small, paved square in Old Montreal characterized by a central bronze statue of a French naval officer standing defiantly atop a broken ship mast. The square sits between the historic City Hall and the former courthouse, occupying land that once served as the site of the city’s first prison from seventeen sixty-three until eighteen thirty-six.
