Luka Tower

St. Luke's Tower stands at the edge of the harbor as a compact, rhomboid-shaped stone structure that defines the northern boundary of the old city's defenses. Dating back to at least the thirteenth century, the tower took its name from the pre-Romanesque church that sits at its base. While it now appears as a weathered piece of the city walls, it was once the critical anchor for a heavy iron chain that stretched across the harbor mouth to block enemy ships from entering.
