Tvrđava sv Ivan

landmark

Tvrđava sv. Ivan, known locally as Mulo Tower, dominates the southeastern edge of the Old Harbor with its massive, rounded limestone walls that slope outward at the base. This structure grew from a modest fourteenth-century harbor fort into a complex bastion system designed to guard the Republic of Ragusa against ships attempting to enter the port. In its early days, the fortress worked alongside a chain stretched across the harbor entrance, an obstacle strong enough to break the keels of vessels that defied the city’s maritime laws.
