Dominican Monastery

The Dominican Monastery is a grand stone complex that forms a fortress-like stretch against the city walls near the Ploče Gate. Its high, bare outer walls were positioned here in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries to bolster the city's vulnerable northeastern flank against rival Venice. While the monastery is a mix of Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, its massive Gothic church remains one of the largest buildings of its kind on the east Adriatic coast.
