Onofrio's Large Fountain

Onofrio's Large Fountain is a massive, sixteen-sided stone structure with a central dome, standing near the Pile Gate as a landmark of Dubrovnik. It was built between fourteen thirty-eight and fourteen forty as the grand terminus of a twelve-kilometer aqueduct system that carried fresh spring water from the hills of Šumet into the heart of the city. Before this engineering feat, residents relied on complex systems of cisterns to collect rainwater from rooftops to survive the long, dry summers.
