Knjižara Morpurgo is identifiable by its distinctive green wooden door and ornate Art Nouveau frontage facing the central People's Square, known locally as Pjaca. Founded in eighteen sixty by the publisher and intellectual Vid Morpurgo, the bookstore occupies a medieval Venetian Gothic palace. At the time of its opening, Split lacked public libraries, and the shop filled this void by functioning as an informal headquarters for the Croatian National Revival.
