Tvrđava Gripe is a low-slung, stone-walled military fortification that sits atop a hill just east of the city center. Built in five stages between sixteen forty-seven and sixteen eighty-two, it was designed by the Venetian Republic to protect Split from Ottoman incursions during the Cretan War. The walls are thick, functional, and stark, marking the only fully preserved defensive structure of its kind left in the city.
