Gråbrødretorv, or Greyfriars Square, is defined by its colorful, low-rise townhouses and the large, aging plane tree that stands at its center. This square takes its name from a Franciscan friary established here in twelve thirty-eight, whose members were known for their grey cowls. While the friary was dissolved in fifteen thirty, the site lived through several cycles of destruction and rebirth.
