The Little Mermaid

A delicate bronze figure sits perched on a granite rock at the water’s edge, gazing wistfully out toward the harbor. Unveiled on August twenty-third, nineteen thirteen, this is the Little Mermaid, an interpretation of the eighteen thirty-seven fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The brewer Carl Jacobsen commissioned the work after watching a ballet performance of the story at the Royal Danish Theatre and becoming enchanted by the narrative of the mermaid who sacrifices everything for love.
