Place Blanche is defined by the red windmill of the Moulin Rouge, which sits at its edge. The square earned its name from the clouds of white gypsum dust that once coated the area, carried down from the nearby Montmartre quarries on the carts of workers. Before the nineteenth century, these hillsides were industrial, feeding the trade for plaster of Paris.
