Saint-Lazare Prison

The square Alban-Satragne holds the last surviving fragment of Saint-Lazare Prison, a small chapel designed by Louis-Pierre Baltard in eighteen thirty-four. This site began as a twelfth-century leper colony before Saint Vincent de Paul transformed the grounds into a religious center in sixteen thirty-two. By the time of the French Revolution, the buildings were repurposed to hold political prisoners, eventually becoming the city’s primary women’s prison.
