The Lycée Buffon is identifiable by its eight distinct towers and a sundial mounted on the exterior wall facing the rue de Vaugirard. Designed by architect Émile Vaudremer and opened in eighteen eighty-nine, the school was built upon the grounds of the former Vaugirard cemetery. It takes its name from the naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon, chosen to mark the centenary of his death.
