The Square du Cardinal Verdier is defined by the unexpected presence of a vintage hand-operated water pump, a relic of a time when this corner of the city served a very different purpose. Created in nineteen thirty-one, the garden occupies the site of what was once bastion number seventy-three of the Thiers wall, the massive nineteenth-century fortification that formerly encircled Paris. While most of these military defenses were dismantled long ago, this small park keeps a piece of that infrastructure alive.
