Monument to Human Rights

The Monument to the Rights of Man and of the Citizen is defined by two towering bronze obelisks flanking an octagonal, temple-like structure built from freestone. Erected in the Champ de Mars gardens in nineteen eighty-nine, this work by Czech sculptor Ivan Theimer and architect Michel Jantzen commemorates the bicentennial of the French Revolution. It honors the seventeen eighty-nine Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, a foundational document that sought to define individual and collective rights for all citizens.
