St. Mark’s Church sits tucked away in the Armenian Quarter, its entrance identified by an inscription that calls it the first church in Christianity. The building is constructed of local stone and sits noticeably below the current street level. Inside, a flight of steps leads down to a crypt that the Syriac Orthodox community identifies as the lower floor of the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark.
