Khan al-Sultan is a fourteen-century caravanserai, an historic inn for traveling merchants and pilgrims, tucked behind a portal on the southern side of Bab al-Silsila Street in the Old City. Built around thirteen eighty-six by the Mamluk Sultan Barquq, the structure spans seventy-seven meters in length. Its design features a central unroofed courtyard flanked by two tiers of barrel-vaulted stone cells.
