The Ancienne Medina is the compact, walled heart of Casablanca, distinguished by its low, whitewashed buildings and narrow, irregular lanes that contrast sharply with the wide boulevards of the surrounding modern city. This quarter marks the original settlement rebuilt in the second half of the eighteenth century by Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah following the seventeen fifty-five earthquake. It served as a fortified port and trading hub, with its walls designed to protect the town from both coastal storms and external threats.
