La Sqala is marked by the thick, stone ramparts of an eighteenth-century coastal bastion that once guarded the harbor. You can identify the site by the old cannons still positioned along its defensive walls, which look out over the Atlantic approach. Built in seventeen sixty-nine under the orders of Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah, the fortification was designed to protect the city from naval attacks and piracy.
