Fes el-Bali is defined by its scale as the largest pedestrian zone in the world, a walled labyrinth of over nine thousand narrow, winding alleys that prohibit cars. Founded by Idriss the First in seven hundred eighty-nine, it grew as two separate settlements on opposite banks of the Fes River before being unified into a single city. The quarter remains a dense collection of residential districts, mosques, madrasas, and traditional workshops that have operated for centuries.
