Café Baba

You can identify Café Baba by the bright blue stairs that lead you up to its entrance in the heart of the Tangier kasbah. This small, family-operated establishment has occupied this spot since nineteen forty-three, when Ayashi Aoufi first opened its doors to local fishermen. The name arrived in the nineteen sixties, thanks to an elderly waiter who wore a traditional white djellaba. Customers grew so fond of his service that they would thank him by calling out, "Shukran, Baba," or "Thank you, father," and the nickname eventually became the name of the cafe itself.
