The Tangier American Legation is a labyrinthine complex of stuccoed masonry buildings located in the city's ancient medina. It is distinguished as the only United States National Historic Landmark situated in a foreign country. Sultan Moulay Suliman gifted the original two-story mud and stone structure to the American government in eighteen twenty-one, marking the first piece of public property the United States ever acquired abroad.
