Lijnbaan

The Lijnbaan is a long, low-profile shopping promenade in the center of Rotterdam characterized by its exclusion of all motor vehicles. When it opened in October nineteen fifty-three, it became the first purpose-built pedestrian shopping street in Europe. Designed by architects Jo van den Broek and Jacob Bakema, the area separated retail spaces from housing and offices, which were placed in independent buildings behind the stores.
