The Witte Huis rises above the Old Harbour with a facade of white glazed bricks decorated with Art Nouveau mosaics and stone sculptures. Completed in eighteen ninety-eight, this ten-story structure stands forty-three meters tall and earned the title of Europe's first high-rise building. Brothers Gerrit and Herman van der Schuijt commissioned the project after a trip to the United States, seeking to bring the scale of American skyscrapers to Rotterdam.
