The Stadhuis of Rotterdam is distinguished by a seventy-one-meter-high clock tower topped with a gold-colored statue of an angel, known as the Vredesengel. Designed by architect Henri Evers, the symmetrical, four-winged building features an imposing natural-stone façade and a central courtyard. It occupies a prominent site on the Coolsingel, a boulevard created at the beginning of the twentieth century by filling in a canal and demolishing an entire neighborhood of over two thousand people to make room for municipal expansion.
