Qwertz - Frans West

monument

Five large, brightly colored steel rolls lie scattered across the grass along the Westersingel. Painted in vivid shades of lemon yellow, lilac, green, blue, and orange, they resemble massive, hand-rolled lumps of clay, their surfaces wrapped in aluminum sheets. Created in two thousand one by the Austrian artist Franz West, this installation is officially titled Qwertz, named after the first six letters found at the top left of a German-style keyboard.
