Hotel Des Indes rises along the Lange Voorhout, distinguished by a coat of arms from Batavia featured in the triangular decoration on its facade and above the entrance canopy. Built in eighteen fifty-eight by architect Arend Roodenburg, the building originally functioned as a private city palace for Baron Thierry van Brienen, a personal advisor to King William the Third. The baron desired a central venue for hosting grand receptions and balls, commissioning a mansion that included a ballroom, stables, and a rotunda where horse-drawn carriages could enter and turn around.
