Mescidi-Aksa Moskee مسجد

religious

The Mescidi-Aksa Mosque on Wagenstraat is distinguished by two prominent steel minarets that rise over twenty-six meters above the street. Before it became a center for the Turkish-Islamic community in nineteen eighty-one, this neoclassical structure served as the main synagogue for the city’s Jewish population. Originally opened in eighteen forty-four, the building functioned as a house of worship until the Nazi occupation during the Second World War, when it was plundered, damaged by arson, and later used as a storage facility for the belongings of deported Jewish residents.
