Fundación Eugenio Granell / Pazo do Marqués de Bendaña

The Pazo do Marqués de Bendaña is identifiable by the statue of Atlas crowning its granite facade, straining to hold a stone sphere carved with the sun and stars. Completed in seventeen fifty-nine by architect Clemente Fernández Sarela, this mansion stands in the Praza do Toural as an example of Compostela Baroque architecture. Its exterior is marked by symmetrical windows and iron balconies, though a local legend claims the stone Atlas will drop his globe the moment a virtuous woman passes beneath him.
