Nydeggkirche

The Nydeggkirche stands at the eastern edge of Bern’s Old Town, marked by its forty-one-meter stone tower and a distinctive green-roofed steeple. This Gothic structure sits on the site of a thirteenth-century fortress, the Nydegg Castle, which was built by Duke Berchtold the Fifth of Zähringen in eleven ninety to guard the river crossing. After the citizens of Bern demolished the castle in the late thirteenth century to expand the city, the first iteration of this church was constructed between thirteen forty-one and thirteen forty-six.
