Käfigturm

The Käfigturm is a forty-nine-meter-high sandstone tower recognizable by its five baroque roof turrets and the massive gateway arch at its base. Located at the end of Marktgasse, this building served as the city's second western defensive gate starting in twelve fifty-six. As Bern expanded westward, the tower lost its role as a portal for merchants and travelers, and following a major city fire in fourteen oh five, it was repurposed to hold prisoners.
