Zähringerbrunnen

The Zähringerbrunnen stands on Kramgasse, marked by a stone column topped with a bear dressed in full armor. Created in fifteen thirty-five by the sculptor Hans Hiltprand, the figure commemorates Berchtold the Fifth, Duke of Zähringen, who founded the city in eleven ninety-one. The bear carries a shield and banner displaying the golden lion of the Zähringen family, while a smaller, playful bear cub sits at its feet nibbling on grapes.
