Schifflaube

The Schifflaube is a narrow street running along the edge of the Aare river, forming the western boundary of the historic Mattequartier in Bern. It takes its name from the Schiffländte, or ship landing-place, which occupied this riverfront for centuries. This area once functioned as the city’s primary harbor, where heavy cargo like grain, timber, and wine arrived by boat to supply the people living on the peninsula above.
