Cathedral of Bern

The most striking feature of the Bern Minster is the elaborate stone sculpture above the main entrance, which depicts the Last Judgment. Carved by Erhard Küng between fourteen sixty and fifteen fifteen, the portal features hundreds of individual figures in a vivid scene of heaven and hell. While much of the cathedral’s original interior was cleared of altars and statues when Bern adopted the Reformation in fifteen twenty-eight, this portal remained untouched. Church leaders at the time viewed the work as a necessary moral warning, allowing it to survive as one of the most complete collections of late Gothic sculpture in Europe.
