Cunard Building

other

The Cunard Building is easily recognized by its massive, rectangular form clad in Portland stone, standing as the central structure among the trio of buildings known as the Three Graces on Liverpool’s Pier Head. Constructed between nineteen fourteen and nineteen seventeen, it was designed by architects William Edward Willink and Philip Coldwell Thicknesse to serve as the headquarters for the Cunard Steamship Company. The building occupies the site of the former George’s Dock, and builders reinforced the old dock walls with hundreds of thousands of cubic feet of concrete to support the weight of the structure.
