The Philharmonic Dining Rooms, known locally as The Phil, stands on the corner of Hope Street and Hardman Street with a facade of exuberant stone carvings and tall, stepped gables. Designed by architect Walter W. Thomas and completed around nineteen hundred, it is a Grade I listed building that represents the pinnacle of the Victorian gin palace style. Its most distinct exterior feature is the set of ornate Art Nouveau metal gates at the entrance, created by designer Henry Bloomfield Bare.
