Crissy Field East Beach is a wide, sandy stretch of shoreline defined by its direct view of the Golden Gate Bridge and its popularity with kite surfers who catch the strong thermal winds rolling in from the bay. The beach sits at the eastern edge of a one-hundred-acre park that has undergone a dramatic transformation. Originally an ancient salt marsh used by the Ramaytush Ohlone people, the land was filled in during the nineteenth century and later served as a primary military aviation hub for the United States Army from nineteen twenty-one to nineteen thirty-six.
